Summary
Without stopping, without letting herself think or hesitate, Amanda blurted out, “Do you still love me?”
The rapid clicking of the keyboard stopped instantly. The silence that followed was heavy, immediate, and deafening. The ambient hum of the refrigerator suddenly sounded like an engine roaring.
Angela froze, her fingers hovering a fraction of an inch above the keys. For a moment, the only movement in the room was the blinking cursor on her laptop screen. Slowly, as if her neck were made of lead, Angela raised her head. She pulled off her glasses, setting them down on top of a draft script, and blinked at Amanda. Her expression was a mix of sheer exhaustion and deep, confused shock.
“Of course I do,” Angela said.

Amanda makes it through five minutes of silence before she hears her phone buzz on her nightstand. Her eyes snap open as she sits up in bed to check the distraction, mind racing as she reaches toward her phone, worried that something is wrong.
As soon as she has the phone in her hand she’s unlocking it and going to her texts, heart thundering in her chest when she sees who the message is from.
