'A birthday cake?' Verso repeated Gustave's words, instantly catching his eyes. 'Didn't know it was my birthday.'
'No, I know it's not,' Gustave laughed and opened a cupboard, taking out two plates.
'What's the reason then?' Verso blurted, tucking a strand of hair behind his ear, and crossed his arms.
Gustave's glance flickered to the gesture. His breath instinctively turned shaky, and he rubbed his prosthetic hand over his arm. 'I don't know…just because? Some bird chittered that you liked sweets, so I… uhm –'

“Hey,” Verso tilts his head chidingly. “I may not be the creator of this world, but I’m more or less sure that you’re not supposed to be sad here. We even found a list of rules, look,” he waves a crumpled piece of paper. Reads, “‘Feeling whooo allowed only in designated areas. Inside the house whooo is prohibited’! See?”
“I’m not inside the house,” Gustave objects, just to be an ass — he can feel a smile forming on his lips. “And I’m not ‘whooo’. More like, ‘hmmm’.”
“‘Hmmm’. Is that the official term?”
“Yup,” Gustave lowers his head, examining the wrist connections of the prosthesis.
Or: Gustave finds out that “Barbapapa” is not really compatible with intricate mechanisms. Luckily, Verso is there to help.

Summary
Gustave and Verso are out buying Christmas presents when they run into each other in the busy, narrow aisle of the Lumière bookstore. It's been years since they've seen each other, and their school days when they were friends are even further away.
But they weren't just friends, although neither was brave enough to admit their crush back then and teenage love was buried when their paths diverted when Verso moved to Paris for university.
Yet now that they are both in Lumière for the Christmas season, those feelings quickly rekindle.
Will they finally have their romance this Christmas?

"You want me to come with you," he says finally, looking at Verso as though he's entirely lost his mind.
