Summary
Just before their arrive at Erid, Rocky is seriously injured, leaving him unconscious. Grace, only able to speak a few Eridian words, has to contact Erid without his best friend’s help.

“Why are you coming here? How do you know our language?”
“Do staaar-eat science fix,” the alien repeated. “Use words... study... cluster-member...” It trailed off mid-note, but its signal remained activated. “Cluster-member... [U N I N T E L L I G I B L E].”
...Who? Maxwell struggled through each painfully slow syllable, waiting and praying for the tone that would cause its preceding notes to snap into place and reveal their subject. They kept waiting, the alien finally fell silent, and not a single eridian in the station was any closer to understanding than they had been Vℓ seconds ago.

Summary
In which Dr. Ryland Grace, experienced middle school teacher, recognizes that he's being treated like a child. He attempts to correct it before Rocky wakes up after an injury on the way to Erid.
Bad luck, malnutrition, and general malaise make this difficult.

Summary
The trip to Erid had felt long; it was always longer when the anticipation grew. Rocky had done well as an Eridian teacher, but Grace was only picking up so much of their language. Part of the issue stemmed from the fact that he had one set of vocal cords. He was pretty good at understanding Rocky, but he knew this was because Rocky spoke in a slow, calculated way for Grace to understand. So it had been agreed that upon arrival, Rocky would do all the talking.
Then the Hail Mary had been assaulted with what Grace liked to call space debris. The ship had rattled and rolled, but he had managed to right it quickly. Not quick enough, however, as Rocky had been thrown around within his xenonite walls, and had banged himself up pretty badly. He had held on to consciousness long enough to tell Grace he'd be fine, to continue to be a brave human and talk to the other Eridians for them, and once the doctors helped him, he'd be fine.
"He better be fine," Grace muttered under his breath, forcing himself to take slow, deep breaths in hopes of calming his racing heart, "Or I'll bring him back just to kill him."
