Summary
Shane Hollander was the legendary figure skater everyone knew; his photo inspired young skaters who dreamed of growing up to be just like him.
But the ice was treacherous. A single misplaced jump took everything from him—even his ability to hear the world around him, to feel the sounds and follow them with every glide across the arena. The change was stark: the televised fall, the blood staining his costume that day, the ringing in his ears, the headaches. Everything had become strange.

This doesn't stop them from meeting again and from Ilya throwing a cruel comment out on the ice. Shane has never enjoyed being just "pretty", not to anyone, but after Ilya implies that Shane wasn't pretty enough for him to stay, Shane is determined to show Ilya just how pretty he can be.

Play was called, and medics from Boston and Montreal rushed on. Shane could feel his heart beating out of his chest. (Get up Ilya, come on baby, get up.) He was stood waiting, trying so desperately to just seem like a concerned opposing player. When in reality Shane felt like his heart was being ripped in two. He had just about convinced himself to sit down, that Ilya would be back up with his cocky smirk in no time; then he saw the blood splattered on the ice.
