Emmrich Volkarin; Once a respected Mourn Watcher, beloved professor, and kindly neighbor. Now he is left nothing more than a prisoner to the Venatori's bidding as they expand their power with their newest collaborators.
For the better and for the worst, Lucanis' empathy gets the better of him. He saves the man and his skeletal assistant, providing a safe space where they can hide under his watch. Now he must re-think his status, his purpose, and his greatest insecurities, all while hiding away evidence of the one thing a Crow is never supposed to do. Break a contract.

Weak yet even breaths followed as Emmrich seemed to doze off, the worrying rattle from earlier thankfully absent. He didn’t look forward to the awkward conversation they would have to have, but if Emmrich was still alive to have it, Lucanis would consider it a fair exchange.When a Venatori ambush leaves Lucanis and a wounded Emmrich trapped in the High Anderfels, they're forced to navigate the treacherous landscape in hopes of reuniting with their lost companions and the Grey Warden patrol they were meant to find. But the mountains hold more than storms and uncanny predators, and Lucanis must wrestle with a far more dangerous conflict: his fiercely guarded feelings for the very necromancer he has sworn to protect.

Summary
Jobless in Antiva after finding himself in the middle of a fabricated scandal, Emmrich falls on hard times. He can't get another teaching position in Antiva, moving back to Nevarra would be a nightmare, and no one wants to hire someone his age. After months of not receiving a response to any of his applications, he's starting to lose hope and feel like a burden for taking up Bellara's guest room without being able to pay his share of the rent.
Until a mysterious letter slips through the mail slot one stormy night, with nothing but his name written across the back in beautiful calligraphy and a purple wax seal on the front depicting a crow in flight, holding a dagger in one talon and a human skull in the other.
