Summary
Jiang Cheng reaches for him the moment he’s above the surface and he can tell that something must have happened because Nie Mingjue is incredibly pale.
“Let’s head back,” Jiang Cheng urges, his only goal to get Nie Mingjue out of the water and hear what happened and he knows that Nie Mingjue must be kind of shaken when he doesn’t protest and simply swims back to the pier where he immediately pulls himself out of the water and even going so far as to take a step away from the lake.
“What happened?” Jiang Cheng asks as he pulls himself out as well and Nie Mingjue lets out a shaky breath.
“Something dragged me under,” he says, his left hand around his right wrist. “There’s something in the lake.”

Summary
“I’m sorry,” Jiang Cheng says, hanging his head low, hoping to make such a pitiful picture that his mother will stop, even though that has never once worked.
“You should be,” she hisses, her displeasure so clear on his face. “How could you let Nie Mingjue kiss you like that?”
Jiang Cheng raises his shoulders defensively, feeling ashamed for the small kiss he had allowed, but a tiny part of himself wonders why he has to feel ashamed for that. It had been an innocent kiss on the cheek, Nie Mingjue pressing it to his skin in greeting, and there is nothing wrong with it.
Jiang Cheng had even briefly leaned into the contact before he pulled away, already knowing that his mother would be displeased with even that brief display of affection and of course Jiang Cheng had been right.

Summary
Jiang Cheng doesn’t know what he has to expect as he follows Nie Mingjue through their camp. Jiang Cheng has made it out of the most recent battle mostly unscathed–apart from a few scratches here and there–so he doesn’t think Nie Mingjue is going to yell at him, like he sometimes does when Jiang Cheng’s recklessness leaves him hurt and injured.
Still, Nie Mingjue seems very determined; determined enough that no soldier dares to step into his way, even though it’s highly unusual that Nie Mingjue can go anywhere without being stopped every second step.
Jiang Cheng fears there’s still some scolding in his future for him and the uncertainty makes his gut churn, even though Nie Mingjue is never mean with his words.
