Summary
Every being in the universe conceptualizes time differently. For the Hamatos, time is a film reel, each moment another frame added to the spool as the projector keeps spinning forward with relentless momentum. What Michelangelo did with a hopeful smile and a wink, reversing that reel entirely—that was a miracle, a once-in-a-timeline event.
Leo wasn't a miracle maker like his brother, but he was resourceful. Thanks to Mikey, the tape had already lost momentum and was still rolling back. Sending back a person would be too much, but a piece of a person? Now that was doable. Instead of erasing the film, Leo would overprint it. Projecting a second image onto frames already exposed, slipping information backward like a note tucked between the celluloid and the sprockets.
All he could do was pray that the note he left his past self would be put to good use.

"What did you do to Leo?" Donnie accused. His voice came out precise and absolutely vicious.
Draxum flinched but held his gaze, a show of respect, scientist to scientist, that Donnie wanted to throw back in his face. "Even with a combination of mystics and science, one cannot truly program a living mind. We can shape tendencies through genetics, lean a brain toward certain temperaments and abilities, but we cannot issue commands." He paused, choosing his next words carefully. "What we can do is lay the groundwork and let the mind complete the pattern on its own."
The connections were forming in Donnie's head before Draxum even finished. Leo's behavior over the years. Beliefs Donnie had never been able to parse. A pattern he hadn't let himself look at directly until now.
Oh god. Please don't let him mean—
Draxum's voice dropped to something just above a whisper. "I needed to ensure the sacrifice would be made. So I introduced what I might call passive suicidality. In retrospect, it was disturbingly simple. Program the baseline knowledge that he was meant to die. Pair it with an instinct toward loyalty, and a drive to win above all else." He paused. "The mind does the rest."

One restless day, as Leo cleans his room, he finds that very file. The invasion is over, all the major threats have been defeated... Leo can finally kick back, relax, and take on some leisurely hobbies.
Like being a Hidden City detective. That counts as "leisurely", right? Nevermind the baggage that comes with such a role.

Leo waited. His leg was growing painfully numb under the ice. He wanted to rip the pack off and heave it across the room where it could shatter on the floor. Instead, he forced himself to stay quiet as he watched everyone disperse on their assignments, feeling his heartbeat inexplicably rise in his chest until he finally couldn’t stand it anymore.
“And me?” Leo looked to Splinter. “I know portaling is kinda off the table right now, but, you know, plans are still kinda my thing. Just give me a minute—an hour max—and I know I can come up with a place for us to stay...” Leo’s voice faded as Splinter placed a warm pink hand on top of his own, making it lay still.
“Do not worry, my baby blue.” He said, giving the back of his hand a pat, a soft smile reaching his furry face. “I know exactly where we will go.”

Leo knew losing an arm would be a hard change. He just didn’t know exactly how many changes he'd have to deal with. Turns out that narrowly avoiding the Krang apocalypse doesn't mean everything goes back to normal.
(Or my traumatized turtle boys spend some time recovering in the countryside because the author was listening to Noah Kahan’s Stick Season album A LOT)
