Summary
There’s a red rose on his windowsill. A real one, and not one of those ghastly automata that open their petals on the hour.
Tony stares at it like it’s some exotic weapon.
After a while, he chases an involuntary smile away, scowls after a short-lived moment of nostalgia, flexes his fingers, and touches it after all, but only to toss it. The rose lands on the floor with a delicate, but utterly pointless flop, and Tony swings to sneer at his latest guard dog.
“Isn’t it your job to ensure nobody’s dumping their compost here?” He walks away, but not before stepping on the flower.
Even half-conscious, Tony’s too aware of the dark mass at the door, and too aware that the dark mass is aware right back. It’s been weeks since Winter had replaced Tony’s last ‘bodyguard’, and Tony’s still not used to him. Not the easiest shadow to shake; terrible trait in someone you want to be ditching, but if Tony’s got one surviving talent left, it’s sneaking out. And tonight he's sneaking out to see Bucky.

Bucky turns his face to the window, but then speaks.
“Stark, I owe you more than one, and this is the only reason I’m not laughin’ right now, but have you been hittin’ the bottle?”
Oh, thank god. Finally, an ally.
Was Peter having to dump Harry not enough? Because in Peter’s humble opinion it was, and he’s still unsuccessfully trying to scrape off the lingering guilt with a mental squeegee.

It’s not the same as seeing it on video or listening to the general comedic banter of ‘don’t make Banner angry, you won’t like him when he’s angry’ when someone makes a smartass comment about ‘the Big Guy’ as if Doc turns into a temperamental forklift instead of a walking extinction event in torn pants.
Bucky couldn’t describe it. What it’s like. To see Bruce changing up close. That body ballooning up, the green wave rolling over the man you’d theoretically trust to stitch a wound one-handed. And see what that body does.
Bucky’s not the type to rattle easy, but he’s shitting bricks when that happens.
So what the fuck is Clint thinking getting anywhere near that?
