those words, for me, change something entirely in gerard’s demeanor. her whole body freezes up, and her eyes dart to meet ray’s. it occurs to him how small she looks hunched over this desk, how tired she seems, how long it’s been since ray’s gotten to properly take care of her. he knows that she’s ahead. he knows that her deadlines aren’t pressing. she can afford to take tonight off.
gerard reaches for the glass and brings it to her lips. her sips are slow, hesitant.
