“I’m glad you’re here,” Luffy says when the bowl is empty. He’s clearly exhausted, his limbs and the lines of his body all drooping as though his bones have all gone wobbly. He can barely sit up on his own. “Sorry they asked you to come.”
“‘Sorry’?” Sabo parrots, not sure he heard correctly. There’s a dull sort of horror blooming in the pit of his stomach like a sick flower. “Why ‘sorry’?”
“Ace had his own adventures, and I have mine,” Luffy mumbles, drifting off again. “You have yours, too. I don’t want you to miss them. I don’t want you to miss anybody. Or to… be here when you’d rather be…”
“Luffy—”
“Free,” Luffy manages. “Sabo’s supposed to be free.”

"'I'm taking the exam to protect my soulmate,' Gon says, unable to keep the pride and affection from his voice. 'Someone’s been hurting them. A lot. For as long as I can remember. I know Hunters have tons of power and connections, so I figure if I become one, I’ll have everything I need to find them, wherever they are, and rescue them.'
Something dark and disarmed flashes in Killua’s wide eyes for a moment, something vulnerable and guarded all at once, but then he simply ducks his head and scoffs.
'Don’t you think that’s a little ridiculous? You don’t know anything about this person other than that they bring you pain. And you’re dedicating your whole life to them. I mean, why do you care about someone who’s caused you nothing but suffering?'
It sounds like Killua was trying to be derisive, but the last few words come out hardly above a hoarse whisper."
Soulmates are bonded through pain, and whoever Gon's soulmate is, wherever Gon's soulmate is, they're being hurt. Terribly. The only thing Gon’s ever wanted is a chance to save them.

It must be the Nen ability. Gon must under the influence of something extremely sinister; it’s the only reason he’d be talking like this. Whatever’s been done to him is profound, corrupting his very capacity for reason."
Gon gets hit with a mysterious Nen ability that inexplicably makes him fall in love with Killua. He doesn't mean any of it, of course. It's entirely artificial. It has to be. As if he would ever actually have feelings for Killua.
