"Y'know, I've always imagined us going on a date to New York." He says, almost absentmindedly, but Neil latches onto it. The very idea embedding itself into his mind until it's an unstoppable echo.
So, he asks, "Wanna go next week?"
"What?"
"New York. Let's go next week."
Todd looks at him with utter confusion before he lets out a thunderous laugh straight from his stomach.

His hair was sticking out in all directions. His eyes were sunken with sleep. He's paler than usual, and it's obvious that the week has taken its toll on him. He looks terrible, and Neil thinks he might be the most beautiful person he's ever seen.

The brunet smiles at him, clearly amused. "Do you believe in soulmates?"
He averts his eyes from Neil's gaze. Maybe if he focuses enough on Pitts' now less than half-candle, then he'd magically find a way to disappear from Neil's scrutiny. He's unsuccessful. He can still feel the brunet's lingering gaze on him—focused and ever-present.
He should've known better than to expect that Neil would just give up. Neil's never done anything half-hearted. His academics, acting, and now, apparently, prying information out of Todd.
Todd knows the answer. But still, he settles on a weak, and rather unconvincing, "I don't know."

"What?" Todd manages to get out, finally turning his head to meet Neil's eyes.
"My soulmate," Neil's looking at him with that smile again, his eyes crinkling and his cheeks flushed red either from the cold or from something else entirely. Todd would bet on the latter.
”Really?" He asks and Neil looks at him like he's ridiculous for even asking.
Still, he nods, "Of course it's you. Who else would it be?"

Summary
When Langa takes a trip to visit family in Canada, both he and Reki find themselves despairing at the distance. Though neither is apt to admit their true feelings for the other, they miss each other desperately and so start exchanging texts whenever they can. Texts that turn rather scandalous when Reki accidentally sends a nude that he knew he never should have taken in the first place.
Yet, outside their fluctuating relationship, more sinister activities are afoot. Being in Canada has dragged Langa back to the days of the car accident that took his father's life and nearly robbed him of his own. An accident that may not have been an accident at all, if Reki's suspicions prove correct. It's dangerous territory to be investigating, especially if the killer is looking to finish what they started.

ch. 17
edit 2026: came back to this fic after not touching it for literal years and WOW this is fantastic. such great mystery writing, where the twist doesn't come out of nowhere (I'd managed to figure it out around chapter 23 I want to say?) and seeing how the characters themselves figure it out and deal with it is what makes it so engaging. Loved the reki-langa dynamic here, and the family dynamic as well. Absolutely incredible.
