A few seconds pass in silence as Fuma works on prying the vent cover from the floor with his pocketknife. “You’re not going to ask why they’re trying to kill you?” Euijoo asks.
“Is the answer going to make them stop trying to kill me?”
“No.”
“Then, unfortunately, it’s not important right now.” The cover pops off with quiet metallic noise. “C’mere.”
Euijoo stares warily at the open hole. “You can’t possibly think we can fit in there.”
or: fuma’s job is to catch military deserters, not play bodyguard for them. euijoo has a way of making things especially difficult.

“Both of our visas are expiring. Which could potentially mean having to go back to our respective homelands for a long time, because getting a new visa approved can take a while. We wanted to tell you, so we can maybe think of solutions that can help speed the process. Neither of us want to leave.”
Nicholas swallows down the worry lodged in his throat when the pack reacts immediately.
“Can we sponsor?” “Maybe there’s some other paperwork we can look into! I’ll research!” “What about citizenship?”
Of course they’d all immediately be by their side. Nicholas’ shoulders relax in increments, a smile starting to play on his lips as he takes in all the ideas and thoughts he’s not even considered himself. Euijoo is making notes on his phone of things to look into and research in case they are plausible solutions, and not for the first time, Nicholas remembers he is home, right here.
“What about a green card?” Yuma’s suggestion rings in the air during a lull, startling Nicholas.
