When they were six and eight, Rin had taken a nose dive into the sandpit at their school while waiting for Sae after they had been dismissed. It had been a rainy day and the sand had clung to his scalp like a tick. Sae had held his hand and they ran home as fast as they could, to the best of their ability, he had snuck Rin into the bathroom while their parents worked around the house and had washed his hair wordlessly.
His palms were wide and smooth, splayed across his scalp they ran gentle circles in his hair, the sand slipped down his head and onto his shoulders, the water ran dark, he felt like Sae had absolved him of something then, and the proof was splattering around his little body, murky brown, dirty.

Summary
The scene in front of him is an awfully familiar one. He has, in the past week, watched it unfold in variations over tens and hundreds of times. Today however, the scene unfolds differently. He watches the girl nibble on her lip, fix her hair and slowly amble up to them. Next to him, Rin makes neat knots in his laces. The hallway loops around them, long winding routes crumble upon one another, he keeps his gaze pinned to the floor, to give the girl the privilege of some privacy.
Then, from under his lashes he sees an envelope being held out to him.
“Um, Isagi this is for you, if you’ll accept it of course.”
Or, Yoichi gets confessed to and Rin struggles to be normal about it.

Then, he had methodically stepped into the locker rooms, stripped himself bare under the flickering fluorescent lights and showered, dabbed himself dry, put on a fresh set of loungewear, and walked out quietly.
He had skipped the evening supper and went to sleep at eight pm, sharp.
At nine he had been woken up by the insistent ringing of his phone.
At nine o one, Sae’s call had gone into voicemail and the blinking light of the device had died down with the notification of a missed call.

When a monster's not a monster, but rather someone for you to stare, the sight of you makes them softer—makes them vulnerable without a care.
That they look to you, it's your weakness. You see them smile, then you're done for. Because you love them, you've peeled an orange. They already have one within their mouth.
