Summary
Growing up, everything was secondhand and battered and worn to all hell. The few times Riz had commented on it as a kid, his mom had tried to spin it into something positive: not used, but well-loved. He’d used it as a thought experiment, let his imagination run wild attempting to investigate what might have caused every stain and scratch, what things the furniture might have seen before finding a second (or third, or fourth) home in the Gukgak residence. But no matter what adventures he created in his mind, he didn’t know for sure.
He knows all the stories here on this couch.

Summary
Riz brings a shaking hand to his face. It’s been years since Fabian’s seen him this brittle, this exhausted, and it makes the tremor of antsiness, the way he holds himself like he can’t relax even more evident. Later, Fabian knows, he’ll be worried, once he can look at his best friend and not have to fight the urge to scream or shake him until some sense rattles free of that incredible, infuriating brain. Right now there’s no room for it. “I’m sorry, okay?”

There are no grand battles that mark senior year at Aguefort Adventuring Academy. There's no dragon or Nightmare King or Night Yorb, just homework and concerts and sleepovers and one lingering question that refuses to leave Riz Gukgak's mind.
It's kind of funny- for an investigator, Riz has always been kind of terrible at figuring out exactly what Fabian means to him.

Okay, sure. So, there was a word for people who didn’t find other people sexy. Great. A normal word. A well-known word. And not a medical condition.
But surely whoever wrote this understood that it was an anomaly. There weren’t enough people like this to warrant a label. After all, what was the point of a human who didn’t want sex?
(What was the point of me? — I’d asked a hundred times before.)
Or: A heteronormative movie adaptation, a very weird BuzzFeed article, and an internet rabbit hole lead Grace to the discovery of a label sixty years in the making.

“School dances are not for me,” Riz insists, dropping his head back on the couch cushions. His legs stretch out in front of him across the shag carpet of Mordred Manor’s den. “I don’t know how many more times I have to say that.”
“Right, yeah, I get that,” Gorgug says. “But maybe you’ve just been unlucky.”
“Statistically, that would be fairly improbable,” Riz says, too tired to sound more conversational and less clinical. He sighs, words spilling out his mouth half-heartedly. “Three data points, three failed experiments. Could the sample size be larger? Yeah, of course. Does the small sample size mean that there’s anything wrong with the data, though? No.” He shrugs. “It’s still data.”
