Summary
Mike’s grip tightens around the wheel. “I missed you too,” he says, caught red-handed in between something teasing and something true. No matter where they are, no matter what’s happening, this has always been the truth: “I miss you.”
He hears the click of Will’s teeth as he closes his mouth, inhaling short through his nose like he’s surprised. Like Mike wasn’t supposed to say that out loud. Then, “Don’t be sad. You’re not allowed to be sad,” he tells him, gently, “it’s my birthday.”

There’s a split-second, in between his breaths, shaky on his tongue, where he realizes the world’s stopped spinning. Everything comes to a complete standstill as Max tilts her head to the side, slowly, like she’s balancing the sight of him beside all the secrets she’s ever learned to keep. “Mike,” she says, quietly.

He’s tried not to dwell on it too much since. It’s not like he didn’t already know he wanted to kiss Will. He’d come to that realization in, like, May. The sky is blue, water is wet, he wants to kiss Will. He got to have a nice dream about it. Great. No dream or realization can change the fact that Will is his best friend — and his ex’s brother — who thinks he’s a total dip. If Mike has to white-knuckle it through the end of high school and subsist entirely on glances at Will’s mouth, then he can do that, probably. And then they can all go to college and Will can get some hot, buff, artist boyfriend, like he deserves, and Mike can, he doesn’t know. Die.

“You are brave,” Will murmurs. His hands have, at some point in the past few minutes, come up to cup Mike’s face, and he rubs one thumb back and forth over his cheekbone. “You’re the bravest guy I know.”
“That’s you,” Mike deflects, shaking his head. “You’re brave all the time. I’m only brave at the last minute.”
“That’s when it counts the most,” Will says. He tips his face up to kiss him again, easy like breathing. Like it was always meant to be like this. God, he hopes they live so he can keep doing this forever.
