“You spend all of your time with him,” Alex starts listing off reasons, since James apparently hasn’t been paying attention, “You’re always suggesting we do something with him, or writing something down to show him, or missing date night to see him.”
“We work together,” James holds his hands out in front of him, as if that’ll stop Alex from reacting, “And he’s new here. I’m just showing him around. Just like I did when you came here.”
“Just like when I came here,” Alex repeats, voice caught in his throat.
He’d known, from the first day he’d walked into James’s home, that this man would be the death of him. And he’d wanted to spend every single moment with him until that eventual death.
Is that how James feels about Will now?
“It’s the nice thing to do,” James looks at him like he’s insane.

His crew chief sends him off with a pat on the back and a muttered, “We’ll get ‘em next time, kid,” and then Jesse is finally free to be sad alone. Thankfully, he’s practically invisible as he makes his way through the bus lot, save for a nod from Austin as he passes by.
It’s two steps up to his bus and then, silence. The car noises drain away, and he’s left alone with his racing thoughts. He needs to lock in and stop with these top five finishes. He needs to win. And the thing is, Jesse should be upset about all of this. It should have been his season. He should be the one with the Connor Zilisch wunderkind story. But, he finds that he doesn’t care. Watching Connor win feels like winning.
