“I’m trying to figure out,” Rose wonders aloud. “Are you always a complete prick? Just with women? Or just when you lose a game?”
Ilya barks a laugh, shocked and almost delighted, and his smile spreads wide enough that Rose can see all those pearly whites of his that are so much nicer than she expected any hockey player’s to be. “All the time,” he grins, “all the time. However much of an asshole Hollander has told you I am, double it.”
She answers truthfully, shrugs her shoulders in her tiny silver dress. “He hasn’t mentioned you at all.”
After a shitshow of an evening in a Montreal nightclub, Ilya wakes up the next morning in Shane’s bed. Only, he’s not in Shane’s bed — Rose Landry is, and he’s in Rose Landry’s body, and she’s in his. Well, what the fuck are they supposed to do with that?

Summary
The next morning, Shane flies out to L.A. and lets himself be photographed having lunch with Rose Landry. This is being careful, he reasons. This is granting himself plausible deniability in case anyone ever sees that photo. This is helping save Rose’s career. He can still have Ilya. Him and Rose just have to pretend well enough that no one thinks twice about Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov. It’s just playing pretend, and if Shane was never very good at that as a child, well. That’s okay. He can learn.

Shane is trying to insulate himself against any chatter about him and Ilya. Rose's reputation needs laundering. The perfect solutions to their problems, are of course, each other. Stay together, get married, divorce once Shane's next contract is secured and Rose has a new agent. Easy.

The first time Ilya looked over his cigarette into Shane Hollander’s eyes, he was struck by the certainty that he’d never be able to deny Shane anything that was his to give. He also knew the list of Things That Were His to Give was pretty fucking finite.
So he was hurt, yes, but not surprised when they called it off after the All-Star game.
Now - a few years, a leg injury described by specialists as catastrophic, and the long overdue death of his father later - Ilya is his own person, for maybe the first time in his life.
It’s totally not weird that the first thing he does with his newfound freedom is move to Ottawa, right?
