Summary
The entire casting room held its breath.
Charles kept talking softly, voice laced with concern. "She was a dick to you."
He moved closer. Their thighs were almost touching.
"Well," Max said, his voice rough, "it fucking hurts."
Charles giggled, a breathless, soft, melodic little sound. Max's breath caught. Because suddenly he wasn't acting. Or maybe he hoped Charles wasn’t too. But the smile looked real. The fondness looked real.
"Maxie," Charles said softly. Max loved how it sounded. "A few years from now, you'll never even remember her."
Max looked at him with ache. And prayed to every power in the universe that Charles wasn't acting.
That maybe, just maybe. He was interested too. Then Charles lifted a hand and cupped his cheek.
It wasn't in the script. Max knew it instantly. He had memorised every version of this scene. The scene was supposed to end with an awkward peck on the cheek. He had been kissed by thirty-odd guys today.
But this wasn't there. This was Charles improvising. To make the moment fond. He went along with it.

Summary
How are we sure about others' intentions when they don't even know themselves?
Where Charles’s architecture firm becomes a little too demanding, leaving him stressed and on edge until his body finally catches up with the weight of it.
Max is right there to catch the fall, but there’s a dark, quiet satisfaction realizing he actually likes seeing his partner this way.
Awakenings happen, but... telling your partner? Optional.
Max has no interest in breaking the man he loves and Charles isn't losing himself, well... not exactly. But inside these walls, Max will keep him exactly where he wants him, small, and totally his.

Summary
The room was dim, the overhead lights off, only a small lamp glowing softly near the bed. Max stopped just inside the doorway.
The room smelt of bitter citrus peels, and the tang of salt. Max's nose crinkles at the scent of distress wafting off of the small figure on the bed.
Charles lay curled slightly on his side, knees drawn in, one arm tucked close to his chest. Too thin. Too still. There was a faint crease between his brows even in sleep, like his body didn’t know how to fully let go anymore. His hair looked limp, his eyes sunken. There were bruises visible on his skin, purple and yellow and green.
His other arm is curled protectively around his abdomen.
