Stanley Snyder was an impeccable student, son, and friend. He maintained the best grades in class, next to his bestfriend, Xeno Houston Wingfield.
He had his whole life laid out in front of him. In a few months, his senior year would end and he would enlist in the military just as he had always dreamed of.
But during a regular study session as his house, parents out for the evening, when Xeno had let his hand linger a little too long on the others as they flipped pages, Stanley realized maybe he was craving something he would never let himself have.

“I don’t forgive you.”
Golden eyes shifted from the ground, reluctant to meet the others face as his gaze danced around in a futile attempt to shake off the heavy weight of his guilt. It was an answer he foresaw but hadn't prepared for.
"A dog is bound by loyalty and instincts..." Xeno's words trailed off as he brought the cigarette to his mouth. He paused millimetres before the filter could touch his lips. Almost contemplating if the DNA mutation caused by this cancer stick was worth it. Over ten years worth of trying to fill the cavity that Stanley caused. No amount of tobacco he packed in would help him heal the bitterness that kept his wound open.
He caved in to the addictive habit of letting the smoke fill his lungs replacing the oxygen that kept his mind thinking straight. Xeno held it in for a moment before exhaling into the night air. A smile crept up on him as he let himself reminisce on the better times he had shared with the soldier.
He rolled the cigarette that was still clutched between his two fingers. Only then did he look up into sun-kissed eyes.
"Sound familiar Stan?"
