Tonight, the ballroom is the site of a solitary duel—combatants with rapiers raised and poised to strike, alert for any opening in each other’s guard. Although their bouts were never played for wins, Maelle was often all too happy to keep score for her and Alan both. Too much of Lucien’s influence on her, sharp-playful taunts and a fierce competitiveness that contrasted starkly against Alan’s stoic, focused silences.
