    Conditioned, she realized with a soft, bitter laugh. Her body had been conditioned. All these years, Daemon had been a furnace beside her, one leg thrown over hers, an arm clamped around her waist like she might vanish in the night. He snored, a low gravelly rumble that should have been annoying but had become her lullaby. He mumbled in his sleep, sometimes Valyrian curses, sometimes her name.

    Without him, her nervous system simply didn’t know how to power down.

    She tried logic first. It was just the first night. One single, solitary night out of more than ten years of marriage.
