The first time Wyatt Hayes knew he wanted to be a goalie, he was six years old. He watched Sergei Vetrov of the Boston Raiders skate out onto the ice and begin a complicated dance of warm ups and ice-prepping and stretching and his uncle shook his head and rolled his eyes.
‘Goalies are so fuckin’ weird,’ he’d said.
‘Glenn, don’t teach the boy swears before he’s graduated from Timbits, or I’ll catch hell from my old lady,’ his dad had chastised his uncle.
Wyatt sat there, butt on the floor, legs crossed, in front of the tv, transfixed. He thought all the best people were weird. Spider-Man was weird. Scarlett Witch was weird. His older sister Kristy was weird. All the adults said so. So Wyatt Hayes was going to be weird, too. And that meant he was going to be a goalie.
