Summary

Then a two-month stint building a supply base puts him in the path of a woman running a hardware store in a village that shouldn't matter to anyone, and for the first time, someone looks at him like she already knows exactly what he is.
Rhea's spent years being someone else's currency and calling it survival. She's not interested in becoming anyone's exception; least of all a scout who keeps finding reasons to come back.
How much of loving someone is recognizing what they were built to be? How much of it is choosing to be something else anyway?
Can their walls stay low long enough to realize they're exactly what the other has always needed? That grief is not something to endure, but carried quietly, until it's small enough to stop noticing?
The slowest of burns, agonizingly so. He gets exactly one flustered moment and never lives it down. Alternating POV, the best of both.
