“It’s a very long story,” he said.
Well, that wasn’t exactly true. The basic truth itself could be summed up real easy: that guy right there is me from the future and that’s his pal Sam, also from the future. All the details and the questions afterwards - only half of which got actual answers - that’s what really took so long.
When a version of himself from the future is brought back to the past right in front of him suddenly HYDRA isn't the most interesting thing in this war. But the more time Bucky spends with himself and the new companion who came with him, the more questions he finds himself with. How much time has really passed? How much can one man be changed from himself? Who is this Sam - and what will he grow to mean to Bucky?

While clearing out an old HYDRA base, Bucky suddenly finds himself trapped in his own past as the Winter Soldier (where he is promptly captured by a 25-year-old Sam Wilson and his partner, Riley).
Bucky looks at Riley and is hit by a cacophony of thoughts and feelings. He’s never met the man, but he’s studied his file. “You’re going to die in two years and …three months, I think,” he tells the airman. Riley looks so young with his round cheeks and faint freckles. “You’ll be shot out of the air by an RPG and Sam won’t be able to do anything to save you. I’m sorry. Maybe you can avoid it… but probably not. That's not… not how time works.”
Riley goes pale, but Sam’s face goes from neutral to hostile. When Bucky opens his mouth again, Sam snaps, “Enough with the prophecies, Cassandra. Either say something useful or I’ll shoot you in the other lung.”
