Harrow sighs, imagining a lightning fast supercut of the night before in her mind, and finds the phantom taste of Ianthe’s filthy martinis on her tongue. “Something along those lines.”
“Ah, now that you mention it, —” (It takes Harrow a moment to get the joke.) “— don’t let her give you any hard drugs, alright?” Pyrrha says, and then, a bit belatedly: “Just the soft ones. You know, consensually. And don’t let those motherfuckers take away who you are.”
“… Right.” Harrow makes the executive decision to not say that it's too late.

Her eye is immediately drawn to the four-poster bed against the wall to her left, which is covered with a draping canopy and piled with pillows and blankets of varying shades of cotton candy colours (unmade, of course). Most notably, strung along the curtain rod connecting the posts of the bed, Harrow spots, unmistakably, a row of worn-to-death pointe shoes, hanging by their neatly tied ribbons, some threadbare at the box, others splotched faintly with what Harrow can only assume is blood. lt reminds her of a gallows.

She imagines the choreography in her head, which she’s seen a million times over, but never thought she’d ever have to dance it herself. She’ll have to lift Harrow and carry her across the stage, and cradle her waist while she does a bajillion pirouettes in a row, and tenderly kiss the backs of her small, bony knuckles, on stage, in front of everyone. The Nutcracker is a theatrical role; he’s expressive, and chivalrous, and it’s his first day being alive. She can already hear Tchaikovsky’s orchestra in her ears. Oh, hell.

“You’re so mean to me, Harry.” Ianthe sighs, then reaches just around the sides of Harrow’s head to tuck a couple of loose tendrils of her hair behind her ears (Clara wears her hair down). Harrow stiffens. “I’ve heard some whispers, so I talked to Augustine, and he says they’ve all already made up their minds.”
They both watch Ianthe’s hands in the mirror, primping and fluffing Harrow’s long black hair, her fingers combing through the ends. It’s then that Harrow knows what’s coming, the truth dawning on her like a shadow, menacing. Ianthe’s smile widens, and she leans down to whisper into Harrow’s ear. She almost doesn’t want her to say it.
