“It must’ve let off an enormous amount of heat, hence the IR flare,” Grace processed aloud, pushing his glasses up the bridge of his nose. “The Petrovascope’s catching the…the orphaned IR signal radiating out through space, getting bounced back to us against debris like space dust.”

Rocky hummed. “Understand. What source then, question?”

“That’s…what I’m not sure about.” Grace adjusted the dial on the camera, leaning in. “It isn’t the Petrova frequency wavelength. But the fact that its IR signal is this strong—its energy output must’ve been unbelievable. Like, astrophage-level unbelievable. I’m guessing quadrillions of Joules…and it only lasted a second—”

Grace shook his head, pulling away from the Petrovascope. “I…I have no idea.”

    ...

My take on how BloodyMary could be a thing. :)

    Summary

Simon thought he'd died. He remembered releasing that stupid black box, he remembered the blood and pain, he remembered Ellie's teeth cracking down on SM-13.

Then he woke up, floating in that hateful submarine, in a pool of blood. Intact. Had that all been some terrible nightmare? Had he failed and was now doomed to die slowly in a portion of the ocean of blood?

Then the speaker that shouldn't be working cracked to life.

    "Hello?"

    --

Grace was content with how his life was going. Sure, he was light years away from Earth and all the other humans. But he was alive, he had a best friend and a whole planet that cared for his happiness and well-being. He got to teach once more and had a beautiful view that was created just for him.

But he was lonely. He had Rocky and the other Eridians of course, but he could really do with a cat or something to cuddle and love. Not that anything like that was going to happen -

Wait, why was the ocean bubbling? Was that a voice? Light? What was happening?!

    Summary

When Grace gets seemingly teleported by means unknown into the SM-13 right as it was nearing The Light, both Simon and Grace have no idea what is happening. Grace knows he was supposed to be in his house on Erid, Simon knows this new guy cannot possibly be a hallucination, and Ava, upon hearing Grace ramble about theories for how he got there, knows that new guy is Smart. Could-Secure-Our-Survival Smart.
She orders Simon to bring Grace back to the surface, and thus begins Grace's ordeal in a starless universe.

    Simon waited.

Waited for them to apologize. Tell him there’s nothing they could do. That he wasn’t worth the trouble or resources, that he wasn’t worth the time.

    But that never came.

Instead, after a second Grace came back on the line, his voice sounding determined now. “Alright,” he said. “Hang tight.”

    Simon blinked slowly. “What?”

    Armando wiggled at him.

    "No."

Armando wiggled again, more fervently this time.

Ryland turned and took another glance at the submarine. It had gently floated its way to the shore, staining his beach in shades of dark red.

Well now he didn't have an excuse. It was sitting right there, on the beach.

    Ryland groaned.

Or: Simon the convict arrives on Erid with some... biological abnormalities. Dr Grace puts his microbiology doctorate to good use trying to figure him out.
