Summary
Harry Potter never truly fought off Voldemort's possession in the Ministry of Magic. He only thought he had. In reality, Voldemort remained hidden just under the surface, determined to sink his claws deeper and turn Potter into his own personal weapon. Though Voldemort risks losing track and control of Potter if he returns to his own body without at least solidifying their strange connection with something physical while it remains unexplored.
Instead he watches in the back of Potter's consciousness, quietly observing those around him, as the young wizard mechanically finishes the year at Hogwarts only to be sent back to a family of muggles for the summer. With only a quarter of his magic available to him and even less of which Voldemort can actually access while keeping Potter unaware of his presence there is not much he can do except work on persuading Potter towards his side. Things become more complicated when Voldemort witnesses Potter’s treatment at the hand of his so-called ‘family’ and ends up saving Potter's life within days of living under the muggle roof.

Then the first egg hatches.
He watches as sharp claws pierce the outer shell of the egg, slowly tearing open the material. The animal moves slowly. She’s just a baby, he knows, so her muscles aren’t at their best, but even now he’s sure those claws could rip out his throat with no effort. A yellow eye peers out from the gap in the egg. Owen stares back at it, unblinking. He smiles as a noise comes from the egg, a raspy chirp that makes an inhuman sound of his own bubble up his throat before he can push it back down.
