Summary
Pre-rut partners, or colloquially called “Rut buddies,” were something that the NHL had been doing pretty much since its inception.
It wasn’t safe for alphas (or omegas) to stay on suppressants for an extended time. Long-term suppression of ruts simply wasn't an option if you wanted an alpha to avoid organ failure by 35. Hence the creation of rut buddies. A teammate that was designated to keep the territorial, aggressive pre-rut teammate in line. They made sure the alpha didn’t kill anyone during practice or a game.
A preheat buddy, well, that was new. Another thing invented for Shane Hollander’s sake. He tried and failed to be appreciative.

Shane is traded to the Centaurs under captain Ilya Rozanov. Between the looming paperwork of choosing a pre-heat partner, trying to find his place on a brand-new team, and deciphering his captain’s strange attitude toward him, Shane is overwhelmed.

“I think,” Shane hummed lowly, tilting Rozanov’s chin skyward with a sharp jab of his index finger. “You want to be good for me.”
“Be good… for you?” Rozanov echoed almost mindlessly.
“Mhm. I could say: sit, stay, roll over, and you’d do it all like my good little dog.”
One drunken Friday night, retired, divorced and touch-starved, Shane Hollander was only trawling through a hookup app to appease his friends and his boredom. The guy he matched with was funny, charming, and built like a Greek God—their connection was instant.
Shane should have known it was too good to be true.
Cut to Monday morning: Shane met his newest client, Ilya Rozanov—the Ottawa Centaurs’ trainwreck of a captain—his sports agency's latest acquisition and his pet project.
Then Shane’s weekend of bliss bubble popped.
Because the man he had spent days laughing, flirting, and sending risque pictures to was the same underdog he had just gambled his reputation on.

Summary
In a pawn shop in Montreal, a bag of used golf clubs is sold to a famous hockey player.
Less than an hour later, another, different famous hockey player’s car is vandalized. In Montreal. With golf clubs.
The common thread between these two events is simple. One of these hockey players is bad at lying to himself. The other is even worse.
