    Summary

Three weeks after Robby and Whitaker start hooking up, Robby catches the flu. He faces a choice: wallow in his own misery or submit the mortifying ordeal of being known.

Or: an unstoppable force (Whitaker’s empathy) meets an immovable object (Robby’s fear of vulnerability). Who wins?

    Summary

Whitaker is knocked out, stretched out in the middle of his bed with the duvet kicked all the way to his knees. It's a pretty sight, even though his wide-open mouth is releasing apneic snores and a sheen of drool is surrounding his lips.

Robby stands there for far too long, counting the moles spattered down his torso. They resemble a starry sky, and he wonders why he even left, when the best view he's seen in the last three months is right in his bedroom.

Five times Robby finds Dennis sleeping + one time they fall asleep together.

    Summary

Robby was nearly half-way done with his cigarette by the time the backdoor opened again, rushing in the sounds of the bar and its wall-mounted television. He closed his eyes to the chaos, knowing, deep down, who had followed him out.

It was the same feeling he got when running up linoleum hills with a strong body trailing behind, a shoulder to steer or a scruff to grab. Hope shadowed in his stride.

Gravel crunched beneath bloody tennis shoes as that very body stopped by the wall.

Robby opened his eyes. “I thought you quit.”

Dennis crossed his arms over his chest and shrugged, eyeing a stumbling drunk as they disappeared down the pavement. “I have about fifteen minutes of bad behavior left in me,” he mumbled.

Owning the Door: to not let anyone get between you and an exit, keeping a clear path to safety and staying in control of a space. Or, a meditation on misplaced faith and short-lived tempers.

    Summary

Dennis wakes in the middle of the night to some noise or shift in the air. Robby's home is already unusually quiet to Dennis, so much so Dennis has trouble sleeping after years of surfing couches, short term rentals in cramped, dormitory-style rooms, his car, and the occasional motel.

He doesn't move, trying to figure out what's different, if something is missing, like when the power goes out and everything feels strangely silent. He runs through his mental checklist: he turned off the oven, checked all the windows, locked up tight, and armed the security alarm. Dennis hasn't forgotten anything.

Dennis doesn't know how it feels to be abandoned — his family still clings to him, even though he's tried for years to shake parts of them off — but he does know what it's like not to feel worthy. To be in pain, to be afraid, to not know if the one thing he needs most is also the thing that'll end up killing him.

    Robby comes home.
