“Right.” Chris pressed on, determined to knock something loose in his dad’s head if it was the last thing he did. “So the custody thing’s just for kids, then.”

Summary
It’s not that Buck didn’t spend a lot of time with the Diazes before, but since he started fostering Theo, he’s spending a lot of time with the Diazes. Theo imprinted on both Eddie and Chris like a duckling, and it’s not like Buck’s going to deny him the opportunity to spend time with them. Not when they’re Buck’s favorite people, too.
Or: Buck finally notices The Elephant in the Room.

Summary
"You know I weigh more than Chris, right?"
"Are you asking me if I know a 190 lbs firefighter weighs more than my nine-year-old son?" Eddie asks, one eyebrow raised.
Buck doesn’t answer, just stares at him.
Eddie lowers his arms.
"Buck, I know how much you weigh and I know I am able to catch you. I deadlift your weight, you've seen me work out."
There is a weird sound coming from above. "Yeah, I remember."
"You're not even that far up. You can just slide down. So don't be scared to -"
"I'm not scared," Buck interrupts. "Chris, tell your dad I'm not scared."
"I don't know Buck," Chris contemplates, his face serious. "You kinda look scared."
"I - I'm not!" Buck splutters. "Eddie, tell him!"
Eddie sighs deeply.
Or: Buck never learnt how to ask for help. Luckily, the Diazes are there to show him how it's done.

Summary
Eddie groaned theatrically, rolling his eyes toward Theo. "I've been bested by a four year old warlord. Tell my story."
Theo giggled, rocking forward until his forehead bonked against Eddie's chin. "You're silly," he declared, then promptly shoved the green Lego into Eddie's mouth like a sacrament.
Buck's laugh cut off abruptly as Eddie spluttered, spitting the brick into his palm with a wet plop. “What the—Theo," Buck scolded halfheartedly, dragging a giggling Theo off Eddie's chest by the back of his shirt. "We don't feed Legos to the Diaz."

Keeping a four year old entertained during dinner prep requires a very specific skillset. Fortunately, Buck and Eddie are excellent at improvised palaeontology, Lego brand awareness, and aggressive negotiations with inanimate green blocks.
A story of mac & cheese, strawberry jelly, and being exactly where you are meant to be.
