But Erling waves away whatever it is that he would have said, and slips his hand into the crook of Jude’s elbow. “I am jesting, my friend. You will have to tell me all about Madrid, and I only shall mourn the loss of your companionship a little, as is right. Come, let’s find our seats while I nurse my broken heart.”
Jude laughs, and it unwinds something brittle inside of him, that cold uncertainty of questions unasked and unanswered that have been gathering between them like sediment, ever since last year. It’s easy to dismiss, with Erling washed in golden light, smiling like he is as relieved to see Jude as Jude is to see him. It’s easy, precariously easy, to call all the choices that have brought them here into question.
It's the Ballon d'Or 2023, one of football's most prestigious awards, and both Jude and Erling are nominated. It's the first time that they're meeting off the pitch since Erling left for Manchester a year ago.
Inevitably, their reunion takes a turn.

This is not what I have come for, he ought to say. He ought to lower his weapon, surrender, apologise. His jaw hurts with the force of his restraint, and across from him, Fingon grins—a jagged thing, beautifully awful, and as ever, still, too convinced of his own sanctity.
Maedhros returns. He and Fingon handle it the way they do most things.

Erling Haaland’s transfer to Real Madrid after the 2026 World Cup is supposed to be the start of something new. A new club. New teammates. New expectations.
The only thing he doesn’t expect is Jude Bellingham.
Once inseparable at Borussia Dortmund, the two reunite in Madrid years later only to realize that time hasn’t buried nearly as much as they thought it had. One drunken mistake, one misunderstood kiss, and a silence that grows heavier by the day leave them trapped in a relationship neither of them knows how to define.
On the pitch, they understand each other without speaking. Off it, they can’t seem to say the words that matter.
Sometimes the hardest thing isn’t falling in love.
