Ilya took a glance in the stands and saw that Rose Landry is holding both hands to her face as she watched her boyfriend climb up from the ice.
“Doesn’t your girlfriend know hockey,” Ilya commented as he glided up to Shane.
“She can skate better than you,” Shane snapped back.
Was he saying that he and Rose Landry have skated together? Hold on, was he admitting that Rose Landry’s was his girlfriend?
White hot jealousy spiked unreasonably in Ilya’s gut. He thanked God he doesn’t get flustered easily but his composure barely holds until he’d thought of a response.
Ilya narrowed his eyes, skating closer and lowering his voice so only Shane could hear. He swiped at his nose so his words can’t be read by any camera that was surely on them.
“Eh, what else does she do better than me, huh?” he asked with a wink. “Surely not everything?”
What if tuna melt and everything after went down differently?

Summary
He was walking to his Jeep when the stench of cigarette smoke hit his nose. A few feet away, a tall, broad shouldered figure was standing, back to Shane, watching the sunset. Propped against the wall next to him was the bi-pride flag emblazoned sled.
“That was a great game.” Shane said, taking a couple steps in the direction of the sledge hockey center. “You’re an amazing player to watch, but you’re really not supposed to smoke here.” The man stiffened and then pivoted slowly towards Shane. Backlit by the setting sun, his facial expression was indiscernible.
“Oh my God Hollander, you are so boring.”
Ilya was dead.
Or at least, Alexei Rozanov said he was. Even after two years, Shane still hoped to see him again. He never imagined reuniting in the parking lot of a community center in suburban Ottawa.

A family emergency means Ilya and Shane never meet in Las Vegas. In Russia, Alexei uncovers Ilya's sexuality and attacks him, inflicting grievous injuries. “I know you said you couldn’t do this week,” a woman was yelling from outside, “but I have to take an extra shift, and Magda is away. Ilya! Are you th-” She paused upon finally stepping inside, a colourful backpack hanging over her shoulder and a bag in her hand. “Oh.”
Shane could hear Rozanov scrambling behind him, probably wiping his stomach off and pulling his clothes out of their rumpled sex state, before he stepped into view of the door.
The small child who had been staring at Shane with her gigantic blue eyes turned at the movement, and her face split into a wide grin. “Papa!”
Picking up right after the tuna melt scene Shane is confronted with Ilya Rozanov's secret child, a move that everyone except for the child is embarrassed and awkward about.

Summary
Just before Shane’s 30th birthday, his entire world comes to a screeching halt. A stupid mistake in Florida gets him outed, traded, depressed, enraged. And to make matters worse, Ilya Rozanov is right there to witness his entire crash and burn.
OR, Shane doesn’t get hurt playing against Boston, and Ilya does break up with him. Flash forward four years, and Shane finds himself playing for the Ottawa Centaurs, where Ilya has been captain since 2019.

“So what’s the plan?” Yuna asked as the four of them set up the air mattresses, putting fresh sheets on all of them and a whole horde of pillows. Old Scooby-Doo episodes were playing on the tv. “How are you going to get Roza— Ilya back?”
“He’s gonna show up to All-Stars looking like a motherfuckin’ snack,” Rose said with a grin as she flopped next to Shane, wearing a pair of his flannel pajama pants and a t-shirt from Juniors.
David snorted a little, shaking his head in amusement. “I think maybe… maybe the real question we should be asking, Shane… is are you willing to leave the Metros for him?”
Shane didn’t even have to think. “Yes.”Shane Hollander decides to stop being afraid with the help of his new best friend, Rose Landry. He also decides if he's going to ask Ilya to be with him, to give up Russia, then he can't also ask him to give up his team. He decides to reconnect with Ilya at All-Stars, not knowing that Ilya won't be there because his father, brother, and sister-in-law have died, leaving him as guardian of his niece. Oh, well. He'll just say hi to him when he gets to his first Boston Raiders practice.
