Summary
Something was always wrong with Shane, probably. He'd always felt out of place, he never got the hang of being chill about anything, he was neurotic, then gay, and none of it ever went away. As his MLH career grew, he began to have the rising suspicion that there was something more to his brain than just being a gay, POC, hockey player- but that was something he'd deal with when he retired.
The Metros were fine, the ending sucked but he played with his husband on the Centaurs, and everything was fine... until it wasn't.
Or; Shane goes to therapy after joining the centaurs and having a much deserved breakdown. Through their sessions, he goes through how he got there.

Autistic Meltdowns and Shutdowns are external and internal involuntary responses to overwhelming stress or sensory input. These are often stereotyped in media, but in reality presentation may vary based on age, gender, support needs, and more.

Maybe it was the exhaustion that made him do it, or maybe it was his mood, or maybe it was because he probably wasn’t all that good, but the next word out of his mouth were, “not possible.”After the tuna meltdown, Marleau tries to get Ilya to tell him what's wrong. (Even though he's totally fine, really). Weeks of pestering and reckless decisions culminates in Ilya opening up to his mother in the most unserious way.

He wondered if this was how his mother felt, a silent war of attrition every morning until she gave in. The translucent orange bottle was unrelenting, taunting, begging to be emptied all at once; whether they went to the fish or to him was anyone’s guess. Nor did it matter, really— the bottle would be empty anyway. The bottle would be freed of whatever chemical amalgamation Eli Lily cooked up in the seventies, its burden passed on to the living.
