Summary
This was a bad play on the ice that was going to hurt someone, and he just didn't know how to stop when he wanted, no, needed this to work. He needed Rose to work. Shane didn't understand why it wasn't working. He was bending low to reply to her when his eye caught on the tall unmistakable frame of Cliff Marleau dancing with a brunette near the bar. Marleau. Ilya's linemate, his friend, nearly as joined at the hip with him as Shane and Hayden. If Cliff Marleau was here it followed that—
- Book: After a moment of brief, terrifying eye contact, Shane flees the club. Jealous, horrified, embarrassed, he ends up having to pull over on the side of the road to cry his eyes out. So sad.
- Show: After a way longer more devastating moment of eye contact while Ilya sucks a blonde's ear lobe, a visibly uncomfortable Shane ends up in bed with Rose while a split screen suggests that he is thinking about Ilya jorking it in the shower. Or Ilya could be jorking it thinking about Shane having sex with Rose. Really, why choose?
- This fic: Imma make it worse. Forget Rose's gentle "Was it better?" hand-holding. We're not leaving this club without some answers.

Marleau didn’t mind. If Boston wanted to pay him seven figures to babysit a hockey prodigy, he'd be happy to sign on the dotted line. He grew up in Nova Scotia, an eldest son too good at hockey to end up working the lobster season. The rougher texture of his upbringing meant that he could hold his own against Rozanov’s somewhat abrasive personality—understood the way that "fucking asshole" could be said with great affection. Marleau at least respected that the rookie had the talent to back up his attitude and could take as good as he gave as far as chirping went.
Or five times when Cliff Marleau felt like Ilya Rozanov's big brother and one time that he needed to say it out loud. (Updated 6/6/2026)

“Ah, so this is competition,” Ilya said, not a question.
He promised Ilya that they could "change the narrative" together. Ilya was keeping up his end of the plan: leaving Boston for Ottawa. And now it was Shane's turn. He was going to come out to his teammates in Montreal.

Summary
After the events on the roof in Vegas, Shane finds himself wandering the streets and ends up at a bar where he later becomes the victim of sexual assault.
"Something is wrong with Shane Hollander.
He no longer returns Ilya’s texts, not even to tell him to fuck off. Over the summer, Ilya thinks this is about Vegas. Thinks maybe he somehow pushed Hollander too far that night. The look on Shane’s face was anger, but Ilya had seen the terror below it too. He understood that terror.
It’s the pre-season when Ilya realizes something else is going on. The charming, bright-eyed golden boy is no longer present in interviews. Hollander answers questions like he’s a wooden man reading from a book. No fire, no passion, no personality, no smile. He is a dense brick. The light of him has gone out and Ilya clocks is immediately."
This will follow Shane's path of recovery from unimaginable violence through his eyes, Ilya's eyes, and those of close friends and family.
