there's a sound. somewhere outside of here, off in the distance, is a noise like glass shattering. the knight pays it no mind. his job is done. it doesn't matter what happens next. whatever that sound was, whatever the thuds quickly growing louder in his periphery are, it doesn't matter.
'derek?' comes from far away, a voice speaking to him from underwater, cutting through the pain, and the knight goes still. he knows that voice, knows it better than his own.
'avery,' he says.

(it wasn't always like this. difficult to keep hold of anything, yes, but there was avery. the one thing he could always look to, the one who shone so bright he lit up the darkness, showing the knight a path back to shore. for a while, that was enough.
but eventually, others learned about the knight. he'd been too careful, and they didn't have anything to call him. so, of course, they just called him 'the knight'.
the knight. the knight, the knight, the knight theknighttheknighttheknight. he was battered with it constantly, anywhere he looked. even avery only ever thought of him like that.

The bus is late.
Avery has been waiting for nineteen minutes, and it's raining, and that one song is stuck in his head and the only reason he's not more annoyed is because there's a little shelter over the bus stop for days like this, so he's not getting wet. Which is nice. Still kind of chilly, though.
The bus is seventeen minutes late.
The next one isn't due for another forty-three minutes and he doesn't want to wait that long, but there's no way he's walking the half hour it would take to get back to his dorm in the rain. Waiting will take more time, sure, but it's not worth it to get soaked.
No, he'll just. Keep waiting.
"Give it twenty-two more minutes," someone says, sitting down next to him, and Avery startles.

When Avery finds out that Dia never went to her prom, he decides to recreate the experience 10 years later.
Climbing onto the bed, she sits with her legs either side of Avery. Her hand over his heart guides him into lying down as she leans over him, their faces close enough to kiss. Which they do – at least five times before Dia finally pulls back, taps off a thin layer of eyeshadow onto the palette, and moves the makeup brush towards his face.
“You’re supposed to keep your eyes closed,” she says.
“I like looking at you,” Avery protests.

In the aftermath of Derek's death, Avery begins to get morning visits from a lonely raven.
Ravens, he learns, begin their courtship rituals at this time of year. They generally mate for life, travel together, and can live for up to 30 years. In January, existing pairs perform choreographed flight dances to strengthen and reaffirm their bonds, a yearly ritual of renewal that prepares them for their early-spring nesting.
“All on your own, huh?” Avery whispers. The bird stops eating and, for a moment, seems to be considering him with a remarkable level of comprehension. Then, it hops over to the other side of the table to be closer to him. “Me too,” he says. “I’m on my own as well.”
