James?” Sherlock said. At first glance, Sherlock wondered if James had extended his stay at the pub longer than advised, but that hypothesis was quickly disregarded. First, he didn’t smell of whiskey – his preferred drink – nor did he have the lazy smile that often adorned his face when drunk. Secondly, James’s cheeks were pink and there was a thin sheen of sweat across his brow. Considering they were nearing Christmas and snow was peppered through James’s hair, this was surprising. Lastly, James leaned against the wall as if he needed it for support, not for balance. “You're ill.”
“I didn’t have—” A rough coughing fit interrupted him that made Sherlock wince. “I didn’t have anywhere else to go. I didn’t want to be alone.”
“Well then, I suppose you came to the right place.”

He froze as he entered the room. Even in the low light he could tell that there was something wrong, that the way Sherlock was lying on the bed was unnatural. His feet reached the floor, though the rest of his body spread out across the narrow mattress. Shou'an was nowhere in sight.
"Sherlock?" he asked as he hurried over. Red glistened in the low light, the blood scarily visible now that he was closer. His chin and cheeks, his chest, around the bed.
"Jesus," he spat out like a curse.

Sherlock wakes James to share a theory. Instead, he finds himself flat on the floor, James's arm at his throat.
