Hell, he even talked her down through the bathroom door when she got her first period after arriving back in Jackson and was convinced she was dying because there was so much blood. A man who can talk about uterine lining and cycles and heavy flows without being a little bitch about it is a man who can talk about almost anything.
And yet, every single time she starts to open her mouth, she just hears his voice from the one time he did tell her exactly what they are.
Or well, what they aren’t.
You aren’t my daughter, and I sure as hell ain’t your dad.
In the end, well.

Missing Chris is less of an emotion these days and more of a physical entity. He’s sure everyone can see that he’s slowly hollowing himself out, that he can’t do much of anything else.
But when Jee laughs at him trying to get his tongue to touch his nose, and Mara loops one of her arms through his to keep him from tossing the rest of his cup in the garbage, Eddie feels solid again.
Maybe he likes yellow birthday cake ice cream after all.
(or, gerrard messes with the team's schedules and eddie 'i just drove my son to flee the state' diaz is the only option to watch mara and jee-yun after school on tuesdays, which, shouldn't be a problem at all, right?)

But then he wiped it away and refocused on the road ahead of them, a long brown ribbon unspooling over the gently rolling hills. “I won’t let anything happen to you, Ellie. You know that, right?”
“Yup. Thought that was already established, given I trusted you to watch my back during the clicker swarm, but—” She shrugged. “You got me this far. I trust you’ll get me even farther.”
