Summary
Eventually, Edward decided to leave the sanctity of the wallpaper, venturing towards the punch bowl for a refill. However, as he did so, he was unfortunate enough to walk directly into a young woman who stumbled right in front of him, having seemingly been jostled by the tight crowd around her. He spilled the remains of his drink all down the front of her dress, and she gave a soft cry of dismay. Edward froze, quite startled and put out. (It did not occur to him that if he had been an outsider to this accident, he would be stifling his laughter at the tableau of a gaping young man and a stained lady.)
“Oh, no,” the young woman said plaintively, looking down at the red stain even now spreading across her dress - white muslin, of course it had to be white muslin. “My dress - how could you? Sir, you must be more careful!”
Her words were scolding, but her voice was sweet and melodious by nature. And, once Edward looked upon her face properly, he was struck by her beauty.
