Summary
Trinity gives herself a second on the final landing, fingers gripping the railing hard enough that the metal leaves a faint red impression in her palm when she pulls away. She takes a steadying breath in through her nose, out through her mouth. Then, she scrapes together her usual mask as she makes her way over to Yolanda's front door, pushes her shoulders back, and knocks.
Yolanda opens the door with a grin that hits Trinity hard in the soft, vulnerable center of her chest. "Hi, baby," she greets, warm and bright and so fucking happy to see her that Trinity feels it like sunlight on her face after a twelve-hour shift, even though it’s well past dusk.

Summary
"Sorry," Dana says, much softer now, and eases the door shut behind her.
Cassie makes a sound that seems like an attempt at a greeting, but it's worn down by pain into inaudible syllables. She moves her face out of the soft fabric of the pillow to be able to talk more coherently, her voice raspier than it is usually, "Didn't hear you come in."
"I called when I left the hospital."
"Mm, I don't know where my phone is."

Summary
"When is Maman going to be home?" Sami asks, hours after the sun has set. Trinity had honestly started to think he'd fallen asleep while watching the cartoons she put on for him and she startles slightly at the sound of his painfully innocent, drowsy words.
"I'm not sure, bud," Trinity says with a frown, checking the time on her phone. It's already well past when Baran usually would have texted that she was on her way home. Her notifications remain stubbornly empty. "You know how busy she can be."

Summary
"Yeah, yeah, I said I'd make it, didn't I?" Trinity sways him from side to side just to feel his dangling feet swing aimlessly in the air and against her legs, earning a giggle as he holds on even tighter. "Oh, ye of little faith."
Sami pulls away enough to beam at her as he wraps his scrawny legs around her waist. He has red, white, and blue temporary tattoos all over one arm, and Trinity tries not to examine the fact that they're seemingly placed in the same spots her own tattoos are. "Maman said you might not get home until after the fireworks started, but I said you would because you promised."

Summary
natalie sheds her clothes like a second skin she’s desperate to leave behind. she feels the cold air hit her, the map of her body laid bare. she’s thinner than she was, her ribs casting faint shadows, her hipbones prominent. there’s a bruise on her thigh, a faded yellow-green, and a scratch on her shoulder that’s just beginning to scab.
lottie doesn’t look away. she looks at nat’s body with a kind of reverence, the way a person looks at a holy relic. she walks into the water first, her ankles disappearing into the black, then her knees. she turns back and holds out a hand.
