    Summary

Jason Todd dies, cradled in the arms of a man who had already seen too much death, and something in Batman breaks. His youngest of five children, in a coffin that should have held himself instead.

Therefore, when freshly orphaned Dick Grayson arrives at the gates of Wayne Manor, it is to a bleak and still in mourning family. He is not even given enough time to unpack his meagre set of belongings before he’s packing them again and is shipped off to a boarding school halfway across the globe.

    And another one.

    And then another.

And so on and so forth.

By the time he’s sixteen, he runs away from the worst of the lot, sick of being shafted off from place-to-place like an unwanted stray. Somehow, in his lowest moment, he catches the eye of a strange one-eyed mercenary, who presents him with an offer too good to refuse.

    “It’s my brother.”

    “What?”

“He’s talking to me.” Dick’s face hardens. “You don’t believe me.”

I’m your brother, you fucking moron,” Jason says, tugging at his hair. “There’s no one else here!”

    Bookmarker's Notes

Listen, Bruce had said. Your brother is sick again, so don’t take anything he says to heart, okay?

“I know what you are,” Dick whispers to him on the back porch, the one just outside the kitchen door that slams too loudly, and which overlooks the garden. After a long summer, the garden has dried and withered, not that you could tell in the dark. You’d have to have seen it in the daytime, everyday, every year, to know that the roses are browning and the tomatoes are growing too ripe, dropping themselves off from the vine and rotting on the ground. As it is, fireflies lift off into the night, and crickets chirp from the bushes. A block of kitchen light is the only source of light they have, and through the screen door, Jason can see the rest of their family bustling back and forth in the kitchen. Jason takes a swig from his drink: carbonated lemonade. There’s no alcohol in the house when Dick is ill.

“And what would that be?” Jason asks. He’s never really dealt with Dick during one of his longer episodes, though he’s been told not to deny his hallucinations, nor confirm them either. He’s not sure how that’s supposed to be done. Only Tim, allegedly, has seen a full fledged episode, and all he had to say on the subject was that it was ‘intense.’ Tim is not the family poet.

“I know that you are lying to me,” Dick continues. “And you are lying to everyone.”

"I'm not lying to you now. I didn't steal the art."

    "I think you did."

    "Then prove it."

"I can! You want proof? I have it."

In which Peter is honest with Neal about his reason for believing he stole the treasure, Neal realizes then and there that his paintings were in the fire, and all of season three of White Collar just might be better for it.

    Summary

There's no way he could pass for Dick’s actual brother and he’s got the face of a shell-shocked cartoon mouse — but not the cutesy mice, the ones in the old 80's movies that gave Dick nightmares as a child. That plus the fact the Drake kid’s got a thick New Jersey accent he can’t shake and that Dick doesn’t look grown-up enough to be toting around a preteen is sure to get people asking questions. Or worse. So Dick hauls Tim in by the strap on his backpack, steps onto the shoulder, sticks his thumb skyward toward the cloudless cornflower blue of middle America in summer, and prays whoever pulls over lies somewhere boring on the sliding scale between serial killer and snitch.

Dick Grayson turns 20 on March 20th, Jason Todd dies on April 27th, and by May 23rd, Bruce Wayne's ward-not-son is rattling around in the bed of a 1979 Ford F-150 heading anywhere but Gotham, New Jersey. Wayne money and Bat technology can't find him, but he's got a bug-eyed shadow and a raw Robin-shaped wound to haul across the continental United States.
