Miyuki raises an eyebrow, his heartbeat still fast from the high of the fight, and steadies himself. Mei’s still looking at him eagerly, a cross between friend and commander, and Miyuki decides not to think too deeply before he grins and tells him no.
It starts with Miyuki meeting Mei, the crown prince of Inashiro, as children. It ends with Miyuki leaving Inashiro and Mei behind at sixteen, with no allegiances to his name.
It starts again, six years later, with Miyuki returning to Mei, who has since become king.

It’s not a complicated decision. It’s a this-or-that, a pure ultimatum laid at Hawks’s feet, because Dabi doesn’t fucking trust him. Hawks has had it too good for too long, playing double-triple agent with zero recourse, and regardless of where his real loyalties lie—if he even knows the answer to that himself, anymore—he can’t keep getting away with it.
Hawks’s laugh fades into a humored smile. “Sorry, you caught me off guard. I’ll be serious,” he says, waving his hand in a markedly non-serious manner. “So I let you burn your handprint on me, or I leave and never come back? Those are my options?”
“Pretty much,” Dabi says. “Or you could die. That works too.”

"You’re not on our side and you never have been. Not in the way that matters,” Dabi continues flatly. It comes up like acid reflux, hot and bitter in the back of his throat. “You’ve been lying to my face since the day we met. Don’t ask me why I’ve entertained it this long, but I’m sick of playing dumb, so I’m giving you a chance to admit it.”
Dabi wishes he didn’t have to say it, and he hates that he wishes anything at all. He craves the apathy that he could hide behind when this all started. He wants this to feel more like an occupational hazard and less like a breakup, he wants it to end in the best-case scenario when it's barely even begun, but that isn't how the game works. If winning were granted, it wouldn’t be a game.
A number of seconds pass before Hawks says something.
“And if I do admit it,” he ventures. His face is a blank slate, his voice drained of affect. “Then what? You’ll kill me?”
“Not if you play your cards right,” Dabi says. “So quit being difficult and say it. At this point I’ll kill you if you don’t say it.”
(So maybe Compress and Toga had a point about Dabi’s empty death threats, because I’ll kill you feels more like: I should kill you, and I could, but please notice that I haven’t yet. All this time, every day, I’ve chosen not to. That wasn’t by accident.)

Jamie's behaviour changes dramatically after they start doing the one-on-one training sessions. He used to be such a brash little bitch when he and Roy played together, and since his return to Richmond he's been more of a whiny little bitch, but now he's hardly acting like a little bitch at all. Roy doesn't know what to do with it.
"Is it just me, or has Tartt been almost tolerable lately?" he asks one day in the coaches' office. "Fucking weird."
No one says anything for a minute, and Roy has mentally moved on to planning next week's drills when Beard says, "Roy, everything that kid has ever done was to get your attention."

It's the exact opposite of Keeley, isn't it. He's spent a lot of time ruminating on all that, trying to sort out where to put the blame, and he's come to the irritatingly mature conclusion that it really wasn't anyone's fault. They wanted different things. He wanted them to share a life, and she wanted them to have two separate lives that intersected now and then. He wanted to shower her with attention, all the time, and she wanted peace and quiet and space.
Jamie hates space. He fills space with anything he's got, with jokes and boasts and insults and arguments and swagger and drama and complaints. He wants nothing more desperately than to be showered with attention.
Roy's attention, fuck you very much Beard. He wants Roy's attention.
