Haixia paused, his hand resting on the wooden board. He looked at Hailou, really looked at him, with an intensity that seemed far too heavy for a twelve-year-old. It wasn't the look of a brother indulging a sibling's whim. It was the look of someone who had calculated the exact cost of a lie, weighed it against the younger boy's comfort, and decided the cost didn't matter.
"Do not test my ability to cover for you, Hailou," Haixia said softly. He reached out, his long, pale fingers catching Hailou’s chin, tilting the boy's face up. With his thumb, Haixia wiped away a stray bubble of soap that had splashed near Hailou’s eye. "I can only fix the trouble you cause if you stay where I can see you.”
