Frank looks down again, sliding his hand over his mouth and shaking his head. “No.” It comes out as a whisper, then he clears his throat. “No. It’s not.” Silence, for a while, as the man thinks. “I fucked up. After Staten Island… You opened up to me, and I messed it all up. Which is par for the course.” A humorless laugh. “…And I’m sorry for that, too, kid.”

“I’ve done this song and dance before, Red, twice already. I’m just… worried about what it would show.” Frank huffed; his eyes felt like they were burning, but he’d be damned before he’d let the pregnancy hormones get to him.
He placed his mug down next to Matt’s. His hands were shaking; he didn’t want to spill its contents onto the rug.
“The ultrasound?”
A simple, two-worded question that didn’t need to be answered but still somehow got to him as if he hadn’t just spent probably an hour tantalising himself over it.
