After all that nastiness that the Culverton Smith case and later Sherrinford brought, John is left not knowing where the two of them stand.
At worst, he would like to still be able to call himself Sherlock's friend. At best, he would love so much more.
Opportunity presents itself when they are tasked with retrieving some very sensitive information they could only get their hands on were they to be invited to the yearly Christmas getaway the rather elitist Chestertons organise each year.
Or, better put, the Christmas getaway that gorgeous, decadent and all around man about town Felix Chesterton (who might or might not have taken a bit of a shine to Sherlock) puts together, much to his brother's chagrin.
What is poor John to do but agree to play the part of Sherlock's significant other as a ruse?
Well, a lot of things come to mind, but such an occasion could be a once in a lifetime thing.
And, who knows, he might even get the courage to finally confess his feelings in the process.
