“I’m sorry.” The broken whisper cracked David’s chest wide open. There was no doubt in his mind that the man in front of him, who’d somehow managed to remain so incredibly kind despite a childhood that’d given him every reason not to be, would never hurt him.
Quite the opposite, Ilya displayed a protectiveness of Shane, Yuna and David that made it clear that he considered them his family. If it was the last thing he did, David would make sure to prove himself worthy of that fiercely loyal protectiveness.
“You have nothing to apologise for, son.” David’s voice came out croaky, his vocal cords suddenly too weak to hold all the emotions he felt. Grief, fear, but also so much gratefulness that Ilya let him see this side of himself – the softness, the vulnerability, the underbelly that David was sure had been slashed wide-open many, many times. It made the complete trust he placed in this family a gift so special, David wanted to lock it away somewhere no one and nothing would ever be able to touch it.

Loud beeps from his phone startled Ilya, and he slowed down, reaching for the device he’d put on the bar between his legs. Jane. He smiled to himself when he saw the notifications, and, checking Marlowe was absorbed in his own fitness, opened it quickly, smiling in anticipation of Shane's words.
The smile was wiped off his face almost instantly.
The blood drained from his face, and Ilya felt like the bottom had just fallen out of his world.
