Summary
Aaron is all too familiar with death, he knows it in all forms, intimately. People, they fear dying so much, they think it unbearable for their existence to end. They nightmare themselves a painfully unrealistic ending of being torn apart, eaten by dogs, crawled over by flesh eating bugs. But in the end it's all the same. Everything comes to an end.
He thinks these people need to get a little more creative.
It's so… unoriginal.
or,
This is Aaron at the beginning.

Summary
Sometimes, and only sometimes, Aaron thinks about death. He does it more than he should considering everything he’s been through, everything he’s survived, and the fact that he is glad to still be breathing. But. But. You don't forget how it feels to choke on your own blood, the taste of it, the slow suffocation and the arms around you, begging, sobbing, curled over you gasping.
Aaron dies in Nathaniel's worst nightmare. Over and over and over again.
Aaron dies in Nathaniel’s worst nightmare, over and over and over again, just to feel his hands on Aaron’s face.
Aaron dies in Nathaniel’s worst nightmare, over and over and over again, just to feel his hands on Aaron’s face, just to feel Nate touch him.
But that’s only sometimes.
or,
it's two years after the war and aaron is left with this aching love for someone an ocean away, this is how he deals.

Summary
“We’ve got a new neighbour,” Gianna said. She gestured at the windows. Opposite La Famiglia, a mover’s van had squeezed itself onto the narrow lane, unloading kitchen equipment.
Santino didn’t bother to look up. He was perched on a bar stool, planning the night’s menu. “We’re in a good area. Walking distance from the Duomo. The empty space wasn’t going to stay empty for long.” He checked his sister’s notes, which were scrawled onto a napkin. “We can’t do a semifreddo for the dolce.”

Summary
Beyond Helen, John was not used to lying. Until the day of her death, he had been grateful that she never asked deeper questions about his tattoos, about the way he habitually watched the shadows, about how he always chose to sit in a restaurant with his back to the wall and within view of the exits, about how he refused to travel. Because of his lies, they lived a staged life drawn in uneven acts.

Summary
Like most of the Excommunicado in the Tribunal Res Judicata, John never asked questions. When he straightened up from Cardinal Fredoli’s ring, he inclined his head, stepping back, his eyes fixed on the floor, already thinking about process. He’d have to get outfitted again. Visit the Apostolic Records—
“John.” Fredoli, as always, was gentle. “Do you ever question the Dispensation?”
John blinked. He waited for a moment, just in case the question was rhetorical. Fredoli had never said a word to him before other than to confirm the issuance or completion of Penitent Markers. “No,” he said finally.
“Do you know how many before you have gone against Gianna D’Antonio?”
“Three.”
“Two were returned in several parts. One was not returned at all.”

Summary
Santino tried to pull out of his sister’s grip once they crossed the threshold into the Continental, but her fingers only tightened. She marched them right up to the concierge, drawing polite glances that flicked over them, pretending disinterest. Santino knew better. They didn’t see a young woman and a child. They saw survivors.
Gianna pushed a gold coin across the counter. “I’d like to see the Manager.”
“One moment.” The concierge picked up the phone, dialling. Waiting. “Sir. Yes. Gianna and Santino D’Antonio. Yes.” He hung up. “He’s in his office, madame.”
Once in the lift, Santino could no longer hold his tongue. “We can’t hide here forever. Not with the Baba Yaga behind us.”
