Like most fourteen-year-olds, Matt started smoking because he thought it would look cool.
It worked for a bit. Mello was definitely impressed when he whipped out a crumpled pack of Chesterfields and a battered lighter he’d stolen from one of the electricians who had repaired the dodgy lights in the boys’ dormitories.
But then he took his first drag, coughed his lungs out and, significantly less impressed, Mello left him drooling on the bathroom floor to go and study.

Mello watched how Matt chewed at his lip vigorously, and how his leg bounced up and down in anticipation, and how every so often he would ruffle his hair and let out a deep, brooding sigh.
The nervousness on his face was clearly evident, though Mello couldn’t tell if he was nervous because of the bet, or because he knew he’d lose, or because Mello’s mad at him or because of all three.

Mello looked at Matt, noticing something different to usual. He didn't typically do his hair any way special, he favoured keeping it down and a bit messy. Today it was tidy; maybe even straightened. It wasn't like Matt to use his straighteners, Mello had done his hair once and he swore up and down that he never wanted it looking like that again—it seems like that was bullshit.
"Your hair looks good today." Mello liked it, really liked it. More than he remembered.
