Summary
“When dead whales sink down to the sea floor, they become a whole”—Grace waves his hands in a big circle and draws out the word to emphasise his point—“ecosystem for a tonne of bottom dwelling creatures down there.
“To them, it’s the equivalent of an oasis falling from the sky and landing in the middle of a desert. It can feed them for decades, and gosh, the microbes that can be found there. I would love to study a whale fall...if they weren't at the bottom of the ocean. Eugh.” He shudders dramatically. “If I never have to go in a submarine, I will die happy.”
Eva wonders if the whale died happy. Or, at least, happy to know its death would bring life to so many. Surely that was a comfort when faced with the end.

Summary
He lifts his good hand, pressing his fingers against his cheek, trying to retether himself to the ground in literally any way he could. He’s fine. He’s fine.
He was fine.
Even if Jared hadn’t been at his locker this morning.
(Or: Jared is dead, and Evan isn't sure how he's allowed to feel.)

Summary
“You look so like Mom,” he mumbles. She isn’t sure if he’s talking to her or himself.
Natalie’s breath hitches, and all at once the realisation crashes over her, a tsunami wave against a tiny coastal town. Her head shakes because no, this is not-
She’s lost it. She has really, truly lost it.
