Being jealous of a beverage is stupid. Even for Mater. It won’t ever get to know Lightning like he does. At the butte, at the motel, at the cow pen. Dust film-dirty over his sweaty wife beater, heartbeat racing from outrunning a bull, cheeks red with exertion and a shared secret. We’re not telling Doc, right? Of course not, buddy.
But it will know him like this: Barefaced and loose-limbed with a different kind of grin, one wild from the rush of victory, and that unearned sense of losing territory is enough for Mater to shade his knuckles white with the grip on his shot.
Mater pines for someone he can't have, then realizes that maybe the world isn't laughing at him for once.

Summary
Once upon a time, a legendary group of heroes known simply as the Hero Party vanquished the villain known as the "Demon King", All For One.
After their arduous journey, the four heroes of the party parted ways. One died peacefully, having settled down. One died after decades of teaching the next generation. Another passed down their power and disappeared into eternity.
The last was Midoriya Izuku. He seemingly disappeared into the depths of history as well, his fate unknown.

Ochako regrets the question just as it escapes her lips. The way Izuku's eyes widen in shock for a split second before fading back into the reserved face she knows is his default expression. He looks at her like he knows something she doesn't but not quite, like even he's not sure he remembers anything at all. But after one long, final moment, his hand clenching around the handle of his sword, his face rises in a soft, albeit sad, smile.
"...I couldn't remember, even if I wanted to."

Mere weeks before UA High School's entrance exams, Midoriya Izuku disappears.
More than a week after, he washes up on Dagobah Beach, wearing a ruined hero costume and holding a blade sparking with lightning.

Summary
For as long as the concept of "heroes" has existed, there have been prayers to such heroes. Prayers that can actually be heard, that can be responded to, calls of help that the entire hero system is designed around.
With prayers comes belief. The Gladiolus Church has stood tall as the leading religion of Japan ever since the Quirk Wars of 22XX, its believers wearing only the most emerald of greens in their garb and praying to the proclaimed god of heroes. The Church has as much, if not more influence than the HPSC to the heroes of Japan today.
The status quo of heroes responding to prayers has been maintained for decades. It has never changed.
That's why the country of Japan panics when suddenly, the prayers disappear-
And a green-haired, amnesiac boy with eyes that do not look like those of a mortal's falls from the sky.
