Summary
He’d never wanted to survive so badly that he would take the perk on his own. The thought of Kai alone in the dark, an unwitting target, hadn’t even occurred to him until it was by some miracle only nearly too late.

Summary
“I dunno,” Kai says, twisting his earring. “Nineteen is kind of a big deal. Like, you’re really not a kid anymore.”
Damon thinks it’s been a while since he was a kid. First he won the national competition that meant he would never do anything again but sit and study and beat information into his head; and then the death knell of his youth came, just on time, when they pulled him out of the killing game alive and told him it was all nothing but a bad dream. “I guess,” he says anyway, “it’s a little weird.”

Summary
Kai’s grip tightens, and his fingers curl past Damon’s sleeve, over his wrist. He really radiates heat: just from this touch, Damon can feel this low-level hum, like a glow from the inside out. It could be stifling, but Damon’s always run cold. He can’t find it in himself to pull away.

Summary
"Priscilla had never watched the walk – it always seemed sort of dirty and dull. Oh, she’d read the little profile of the winner afterward, talk odds politely with the other kids at school, fantasize occasionally about what could be done with all that money – but her family wasn’t the sort to turn the TV on to watch it happen. They weren’t into sports. She kept that up her first May living without them, and ignored her roommates’ fiddling over the remote the first evening. She didn’t watch it, so she didn’t know he was there until the second day."
Priscilla watches her ex-boyfriend on the television.
